Smokey Robinson and the Miracles

The Miracle's "Shop Around" was the first major hit for the Motown record label that William "Smokey" Robinson, Jr. would help to encourage founder Berry Gordy to establish. The Miracle's "Shop Around" was the first major hit for the Motown record label that William "Smokey" Robinson, Jr. would help to encourage founder Berry Gordy to establish. Originally declared too similar to the already successful mixed gender r&b vocal group, The Platters, The Miracles were dismissed before Smokey opened up his songbook for his lifelong friend, partner and mentor, Berry Gordy helped him to improve his songwriting abilities. Five years on and Motown Records was the largest, most successful black owned and operated corporation in America, thanks in no small part to the legendary catalog of Smokey and his Miracles. With songs like "You've Really Got a Hold On Me," "Tracks of My Tears," "Going to a Go-Go," and "Tears of a Clown," Smokey's buttery-smooth tenor and his Miracles backing support spearheaded the upstart Motown label and influenced the entire soul genre after them. Without a doubt one of the most legendary acts of not only classic soul and r&b, but pop music as a whole.Smokey Robinson and The Miracles were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's second class of inductees in 1987. « hide
