Chicago's Rise Against began in 1999 when ex-88 Fingers Louie bassist Joe Principe tapped area vocalist Tim McIlrath foranew projectrootedinthe sound and social vision of traditionalist hardcore. Joined by fellow 88 Fingers vet Dan Precisiononguitar and, eventually,drummerBrandonBarnes, Rise Against signed to Fat Wreck and issued The Unraveling in2001.Precision left the band that same year tobe replaced by Todd Mohney. Bythis point, guitar dutieswere beinghandled byChris Chasse(Reach the Sky). Rise Against made their major-label debut in August 2004with Siren Song of theCounterCulture.Theytoured steadily after the album's release, received plenty of solid press, and even saw CounterCulture crack theBillboardTop200. In2005, Rise Against appeared in the skateboarding film Lords of Dogtown, playing an old-school Calipunkband. (Theyperformed arousingversion of Black Flag's "Nervous Breakdown" for the film's soundtrack.) Rise Against continuedtotourthroughout that summer,including a spotat the U.K.'s Reading and Leeds festivals in August. Their fourth album,TheSufferer & theWitness, appeared in July 2006 andits debut atnumber ten on the Billboard Top 200 was their highest yet.Theband spent the summertearing up Warped's main stage beforehooking up withThursday and Billy Talent that fall. RiseAgainstcontinued playing shows into 2007,but their extensive tour schedule eventuallyproved to be toomuch for Chasse,whobowed out that February. The band solidered on,enlisting Only Crime's Zach Blair to temporarily take his place. In2008,Rise Against released Appeal to Reason, which marked a moremelodic shift for the band and was their most success full album to date,reaching #3 on the Billboard chart. For their next album, the band hit the studio with punk mainstay Bill Stevenson,who played with Black Flag, Descendents and All.
