Puddle of Mudd

One of the major beneficiaries of the third wave of post-grunge in the early 21st century, Puddle of Mudd's debut albumCome Clean sold astaggering five million copies on the back of singles 'Blurry,' 'Control' and the monster hit 'She HatesMe. Contrary to popular perception, Puddle of Mudd's roots stretch back to the early 90s when singer/guitarist Wes Scantlinformed a band inspiredby the emerging heroes of the grunge movement: Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains (with whomhe performed a number of songs at 2005'sTsunami Benefit). In fact, the group's detractors often accuse them of beingtalentless derivatives, citing the considerable similarities in styleand delivery to bands like Nirvana. Scantlin's vocals inparticular resemble Cobain's to a large extent. Criticisms aside, five million sales of a debut album is no easy feat, and Scantlin couldn't have achieved it without bandmembers Paul Phillips(guitar), Douglas Ardito (bass) and Greg Upchurch (drums). Their follow-up, Life On Display failedto produce a single as successful as theprofanity-laden 'She Hates Me' but the moderate success 'Away With Me' did propellthe album to 600,000 copies sold. As contemporaries Nickelback continue to soar from strength to strength, it appears Puddle of Mudd's days as pop sensationsmay be numbered, and the departures in 2005 of Paul Phillips and Greg Upchurch (who joined 3 Doors Down) have hurt theband further. Nonetheless, Puddle ofMudd is currently working on a third album, due this year. « hide
