religious spokesperson, she's offended more people than she could name. Despite her eventful life in thepublic eye, it's the Italian-American's musical
achievements for which she will be remembered. Her 13 studio albums (includingsoundtracks) span 22 years, beginning in 1983 with the appropriately
entitled 'Madonna.' While her debut sold 8 million and madeMadonna a star, it was the subsequent releases of 'Like A Virgin' in 1984 and 'True Blue' in
1986 which would elevate her to legendarystatus, each selling in excess of 20 million copies to date. Controversy followed Madonna wherever she went in
the 80s and early 90s,entirely by her own design, of course. Her overtly sexual performances offended millions, resulting in the banning of many of her
videos, including the legendary 'Justify My Love' clip. 'Like a Prayer' enraged the Roman Catholic Church, as Madonna openly turned her back onher
religious upbringing and simulated sex with a Black Jesus. However, the 90s saw Madonna's commercial viability decline, and with thiscame a certain
maturity in her music. Her performance in the movie 'Evita,' the story of the legendary second lady of Argentina Eva Peron, and subsequent album 'Ray of
Light' (which sounded like the grown-up cousin of her True Blue) established Madonna again as a seriousartist and a true commercial hit, the latter
selling over 17 million copies worldwide. The massively successful 'Music' followed in 2000,selling 15 million copies, marking the third peak of her music
career. 2003's 'American Life' was a disappointing failure, despite selling 4million copies. 2005's 'Confessions on the Dancefloor' is generally agreed to be
a marked improvement. « hide |
