Founder, Steve Pederson, had recently graduated from Duke University School of Law in 2003 when he headed back home to Omaha, Nebraska, to find a job as a lawyer. In his down time, and while living in his friend's basement, Pederson, who is a former member of Cursive and The White Octave, penned 10 tracks to make his first record as Criteria. "En Garde" was recorded with the help of A.J. Mogis - backup vocals, bass guitar, Aaron Druery - backup vocals, guitar, and Mike Sweeney - drums.
After Initial Records, who originally released "En Garde," went bankrupt, Pederson and Criteria signed with Saddle Creek Records and re-released Garde, recorded and released a new record, "When We Break," and put out the new album’s first single, "Prevent the world." Pederson eventually quit his job as a lawyer to focus full time on Criteria.
Criteria has preformed with such bands as Poison the well, Thunderbirds are Now!, The Fall of Troy, and Pederson's previous band, Cursive.
