Van der Graaf Generator were an English progressive band. Two of their albums, Pawn Hearts and Godbluff, are considered classics in the prog world. They named themselves after a piece of electric equipment designed to produce static electricity. They're best known in the prog world for having much darker lyrics than other 70s band of the time, thanks to frontman Peter Hammill. They initially disbanded in1972 due to difficulties with their record company and financing, but returned briefly from 1975 to 1977.
