Replikants

Although Replikants includes two members from the United States trio Unwound — guitarist Justin Trosper and original drummer Brandt Sandeno — the two bands’ sounds could hardly be less similar. Instead of Unwound’s fierce, crunchy rock music, this is very murky breakbeat that uses a live drummer and what sounds like an analogue keyboard. It’s definitely not indie rock; abstract space rock is probably a better term to use, and its spare, reverbed-out drums show a strong dub influence. Instead of Unwound’s fierce, crunchy rock music, this is very murky breakbeat that uses a live drummer and what sounds like an analogue keyboard. It’s definitely not indie rock; abstract space rock is probably a better term to use, and its spare, reverbed-out drums show a strong dub influence. The drums and keyboard slowly fade into and out of focus, sliding into a hypnotic rhythm and adding scattered samples, until the whole composition builds to a subtle climax before dissolving into a jumble of cut up vocal samples.
