Ravi Shankar

Chances are, if you have heard of one Indian musician, it will be Ravi Shankar. His sitar playing became incredibly popular during the 60s, where he shot to fame, with rock bands such as the Beatles, George Harrison in particular, expressing admiration for and in some cases, performing with him. He played at the Monterey Pop Festival and Woodstock, despite eyeing the western consumption of Indian tradition, which he viewed as "superficial" and "exploitative". He is perhaps most well known recently as the father of Norah Jones, and his other daughter, Anoushka Shankar became an accomplished sitar player in her own right, performing with her father on occasion.
