Rainbow
Hard Rock

Rainbow was a group started by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore after leaving Deep Purple. The lineup for the group was ever-changing, with virtually every album being made by a completely different band. The original lineup consisted of Blackmore along with members of the group Elf (minus their guitarist), which included the great metal frontman Ronnie James Dio on vocals. They recorded Rainbow's debut album, "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow" and soon afterwards Blackmore fired everyone except Dio. The next incarnation of the group was considered their classic lineup; with Blackmore on guitar, Dio on vocals, the late Cozy Powell on drums, Jimmy Bain on bass, and Tony Carey on keys. After recording "Rising" the band was splintered again, with only Blackmore, Dio, and Powell remaining. The process would continue with Dio leaving the band after another album, "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll", and Cozy Powell leaving after the next.

The lineup would continue changing, with band members such as Roger Glover (Former Deep Purple bassist, who himself was kicked out of that band by no other than Blackmore), Don Airey (Future Black Sabbath and Deep Purple keyboardist), and singer Joe Lynn Turner joining the ranks. Rainbow would eventually end, at least for awhile, when Glover and Blackmore reunited with Deep Purple in the 80's. It would later resurface for awhile in the 90's, after Ritchie once again leaves Deep Purple.

Ritchie Blackmore is currently perfoming with his Renaissance band, Blackmore's Night, and the future of Rainbow is uncertain. « hide
