The 1980’s was remembered for it’s defiance to uptake the use conventional instruments, dumping them for electric imitations. Of all of the groups in the new wave movement to have formed their sound around this ideal, Phil Collins was initially set to have been one of the decade’s lesser success stories. To the contrary he in fact was highly successful, making use of soft rock anthems, electronica, and the resounding image and ideas first touted as the percussionist within his prog/art-rock birthplace, Genesis. After his relationship withPeter Gabriel took turns for the worse after his decision to leave the band, Collins and his band mates were forced to audition over 400 different vocalists, finally settling on the fact that Gabriel would perhaps never be replaced. Collins quickly made the decision to go solo, although he was always unsure about this, and where it would take him. Despite this, his 1981 debut album Face Value was a hit success, showcasing not only a unique subtle hoarse in his voice, but also his skill at arranging and composing. This skill bled into other areas of musical arrangement that eventually worked their way into many children’s animated movies such as Brother Bear and The Jungle Book II.His primetime decade of the ‘80s saw the release of Hello, I Must Be Going!, somewhat dark and well confined to soft-rock standards, No Jacket Required, a radical change towards pop-funk, and finally …But Seriously. All these albums tried and tested a different approach, style and image to accompany them. Even though had a knack for composing synth-drum and piano arrangements with supplementary brass hooks, the effect is that some of his music is highly dated within the decade it formed within, and also can sometimes demonstrate a quality of monotony. But while many are quick to judge his music, Collins himself is a multi-faceted individual who solely believes in everything he does, and for that means that many will find something worthwhile in almost any of his material, including his later albums. « hide
