Sir Elton Hercules John (born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, March 25, 1947,) an honorary knight of the United Kingdom, is a legendary pop singer, composer and pianist who, with writing partner Bernie Taupin, is estimated to have racked up over 200 million single and album sales worlwide since his first release in 1967, over 60 million coming in the US alone.

Sir Elton shot to fame in the early- and mid-70s, combining hit singles like 'Rocket Man' and 'Tiny Dancer' with an increasigly flamboyant fashion sense and stage show. 1973 saw him release what is considered by many to be his greatest album, the double-LP 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,' an obvious nod to classic film 'The Wizard of Oz.' It spawned hit singles 'Benny & The Jets,' 'Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting),' and the best selling song of all time, 'Candle In The Wind,' aswell as the classic 'Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding.'

His dominance of the pop and rock worlds was now secure, and would remain until the late 70s, when his popularity slowly began to decline, coinciding with personal problems, drug addiction and public admission of his homosexuality. Interestingly, he has chosen to perform publically with supposedly homophobic musicians Eminem and Axl Rose at times when they were coming under heavy attack for their apparently misunderstood sentiments.

In 1998, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and he continues to release music to popular acclaim to this date, achieving hit singles in 2003, 2004 and 2005, most recently performing on 2Pac's posthumous single 'Ghetto Gospel,' produced by Eminem. « hide
