The Dillinger Escape Plan is a math metal/Grindcore band that integrates metal with free jazz via varying time signatures and free jazz guitar interludes. They are known for the intensity and too close for comfort violence of their live shows, and are rumored to choose their music's time signatures with the aid of dice, or with the use of some kind of code. Singer Greg Puciato has remarked that they don't care about technicality at all and that the use of math or coding in their music is all false, but that remark is more than likely a joke meant to throw people off, as many reliable sources have validated the code theory. Other rumors claim that being a proven genius is a requirement for joining the band, although this is probably false. Their name refers to outlaw John Dillinger, given their use of samples relating to him in their early live shows.
