Culprate

If you wack Culprate into YouTube, you’ll be hit with some pretty spectacular dubstep. Magnificently produced and perfectly executed, Culprate is the name that seems to be on everyone’s lips at the moment. See for yourself, dubstep idioms such as "sick", "heavy’ and "pure filth" are being spoken out from fans across the globe. One enthusiast even wrote, and i quote, "makes me want to collect used chewing gum and build a sculpture of the Russian Prime Minister out of it". Not the most conventional of complements, but it sure did make us laugh! Culprate’s musical intuition started at the age of just 13, when he decided to learn the guitar. By the age of 15, Culprate’s passion and creativity really came into bloom as he was introduced to electronic music production at college. From then on it was just a matter of time before his driven persona and growing production skills resulted in fantastic dub step anthems, tearing their way through clubs around the world. Having established several releases already on respected dubstep record labels like Dubsaw, Culprate has already marked his territory in the dubstep scene. However, he is far from content, admitting recently he would love to get his hands on some hardware to take his production to the next level. And with influences ranging from Squarepusher to Amon Tobin, only Culprate could tell you what sort of production the future holds. But from what we’ve seen already, we know it’ll be good. "I haven’t got very much to say for myself, but I suppose I’d better say something. I’m 21 years old and live in a town called Watford just outside London. I suppose I like doing things that most 21 year olds like doing. Drinking, drugs, and the missus. I love music, I don’t really follow genres, well, I do to a degree, but I think that most of the time, genres form a prejudgement in your mind, so you think you don’t like something before you’ve even listened to it. Any way, i'm ranting, where was I? oh yeah, I love music and take influences from everywhere. I arrange these influences into my own creation. You could describe it as drum and bass but with obvious electric influence. I began my musical path when i was about 15, when I took up the guitar, I had an excellent teacher, Nick Andrews, complete ass hole, but I never knew a guitar could be played like that. Any way, despite having him as my tutor, I wasn’t that good, but good enough to absorb the theory. I started getting into music production when i started college, about 5 years ago. There i found Reason 2. I know what you’re thinking, I know believe me for the first 2-3 years i made an array of… well… shite really. I like to think that over the past 2 years, i have refined my sound into what it is today. Now made on Reason 4. It’s hard to try and determine what or who inspires me, I could say I am influenced by anything. Dark sounds. Movies. Weed. Relentless Drums. Mates. I like hearing other unsigned artists. The more interesting stuff is generally from unsigned artists. So that just makes me wonder, who else is out there that I haven’t heard yet? If I had to define my sound, i would say… Noisia meets Current Value, but I look more at the sequence than the sound. If there were attributes that I was allowed to take from these guys, they would have to be, Noisia's Bass and kick/sub bass relation. And current values cymbals are sick!!!! No one compares". « hide
