Bomb the Music Industry!

Bomb the Music Industry! (abbreviated BtMI!) was a DIY punk/ska/indie collective from Baldwin, Nassau County, New York. Bomb the Music Industry! (abbreviated BtMI!) was a DIY punk/ska/indie collective from Baldwin, Nassau County, New York. BtMI!could often be found playing in basements and other underground shows, although they had a thriving fan base and had scoredplenty of big gigs--not to mention some big name publicity, including airplay on the TV shows The Office and Weeds.Their crazy concoction of quirky punk instrumentation like crazy synths, fake drums and the sincere vocals of frontman, songwriter, producer and guitarist Jeff Rosenstock makes BtMI!'s unique and insanely addictive.BtMI! released seven albums, numerous EPs and other releases for free on Rosenstock's web label Quote Unquote Records, theself-proclaimed "First Donation-Based Label Ever". Rosenstock has been quoted saying, "making the music doesn't cost usanything so why should we charge people to listen to it?" BtMI! released their early albums independently and have beenknown to approach the recording of their music with a strong DIY ethic, needing only an iMac and a kitchen, bathroom orbasement as their "studio". As for merchandise, the band provided spray paint and stencils at shows as long as fans broughtblank shirts.Initally formed as a "collective", Rosenstock has been backed over the years by Rick Johnson, Matt Kurz, Laura Stevenson, Sean McCabe, Sean Qualls, James Lynch, Neil Callaghan, Dave Solomon, Jason Rutcofsky, Jenna Beatty, SteveFoote, Christine Mackie, Jeff Tobias, and Craig Howe, just to name a few. Eventually, the band arrived at a much more stablelineup consisting of Rosenstock, John DeDomenici, Matt Keegan, Mike Costa and Tom Malinowski. BtMI! announced that theywere disbanding in 2012, spending that year on tour before taking a break in 2013, and proceeding to play their final shows inearly 2014.Presently, Rosenstock performs and releases music under his own name, accompanied by a backing band that features JohnDeDomenici on bass. Rosenstock has also become a prolific producer in the years following BtMI!'s demise, working on his ownrecords as part of the power pop duo Antarctigo Vespucci and Mike Park's The Bruce Lee Band, in addition toalbums by The Smith Street Band and Dan Andriano in the Emergency Room. Matt Keegan moved to Brisbane,Australia after BtMI!'s final tours but remains active musically; his San Jose indie rock band Shinobu released and touredin support of a new album in 2015. Despite his reputation as a drummer, Mike Costa currently writes music as thevocalist/guitarist (and drummer) of his indie rock/pop punk band Binary Heart, who released two EPs in 2011 and 2012,as well as a full-length album called Brighter Days in 2015. Having begun her solo career sometime during BtMI!'s earlyyears, Laura Stevenson released her debut album Sit Resist after leaving the band following the release of theAdults!!! record in 2010, and has since gained success and positive reception for her music, supported by extensivedomestic and international tours. Continuing their close friendship even after the end of BtMI!, Rosenstock producedStevenson's third album, Cocksure, in 2015. A film documenting the band over five years and across eleven countriesentitled Never Get Tired: The Bomb the Music Industry! Story was completed and released in 2015 after receiving $4,735in 2010 and another $31,450 in 2014, both through crowdfunding on Kickstarter. « hide
