Review Summary: I looked out this morning and the sun was gone. Turned on some music to start my day.
Spider Island’s debut EP,
The Witch & The Dragon, hits just the right spot. My friend, you’re in for an EP that harkens back to the glory days of rock n’ roll. It’s poorly recorded, the sound leveling is abysmal, the lead singer is imperfect, and the drums are often ill-fitting, but there’s something to be said for sketchiness when the result is raw, earnest music. So what kind of music is this? This is true rock n’ roll. This is the kind of stuff that could easily play alongside Boston and Rush on the radio and no one would think twice. It’s instant nostalgia, and highly recommended to anyone that keep on rockin’ in the free world. Is this EP particularly special? No, not really, and that’s what makes it great. Aside from the screams in ‘Planet of Chaos’, or the strange obsession with guitar solos,
The Witch & The Dragon is straightforward, ageless rock/prog rock. In other words, it’s pretty cool.
