Review Summary: maybe he should stick with video game soundtracks.

Cryptidalia was a tasty electronic album despite its tendency to bore, and naturally, no matter the outcome, there would need to be a remix EP to compliment it. The remixes, of course, would all be completed by Rom Di Prisco, since he was born to remix. The purpose of the EP would be to put a new spin on his original songs, all the while infusing new life in them, making them very interesting. That was the plan, anyway. Much like Cryptidalia did not meet expectations, the Cryptidalia Remixes EP meets even less expectations, and then spits in your face. It is a subpar assemblage of remixes that are somehow worse than the original songs. Unfortunately, since Rom Di Prisco specializes in minimal techno, he just can’t escape from the confines of his minimalistic tendencies, and it shows. These are barely even remixes. Next to nothing has changed to make the songs notable or even slightly different. Basically, Rom Di Prisco has taken a few of his songs, tossed in slightly louder beats, and also slightly emphasized the song’s melodies – that’s it. There are almost no new sounds to be heard, and even if they exist, they are so unnoticeable that they might as well be the wind. Remixing songs to be even more boring than before is quite the accomplishment, but Rom pulled it off. While the original steak was tasty enough, Rom has drained all of its juices, cut off its fat, and left out the sauce and spices. This EP isn’t worth spending the five dollars on it, considering that Cryptidalia is free, and basically the same thing except much better. Let’s pretend this didn’t happen.

I'm actually really glad this EP was made, since the digital release covers some weak tracks from the album that got the improvement they needed. I probably wouldn't listen to Cryptidalia without these remixes, as it's clearly intended as a sort of ambient journey and only works in that way for me.

If Rom is specialized in anything it's trance and not "minimal techno" btw. Actually he's involved with a lot of different genres, as his occupation with soundtracks already implicates.
