Review Summary: MellowHype drops a rap album of the year contender, and proves OFWGKTA is deeper than just Tyler, The Creator and Earl Sweatshirt.
MellowHype consists of two Odd Future Wolf Gang members Left Brain and Hodgy Beats. In my opinion Hodgy Beats is quite under-rated when it comes to everyone in OFWKTA. With the release (Or rather, re-realease) of BLACKENEDWHITE, maybe people will finally realize Odd Future isn't just Tyler and Earl.
The album opens with Primo. It's one of the more relaxed songs on the album, which make you realize just how good Hodgy and Left Brain are at writing lyrics. The beat is haunting with how the pitch changes. All in all a good song. The next song, Gunsounds (No, that's not a typo) is one of my favorites. The beat is fantastic and upbeat, and Hodgy's rapping flows perfectly with it. Again the lyrics are clever and fantastic. "Brain" features fellow OF rapper Domo Genesis. In my opinion he's alright. Not really special, just average. He doesn't add much to the song, and it's a decent offering.
"64" is by FAR the best song on the album. Everything from the beat, to the way Hodgy raps to it, this song works brilliantly. This song also contains some of, if not the best lyrics if the album. With a knock out chorus, this is the choice song from this album. "Deaddeputy" (Again, not a typo) is one of the songs that really shows off Hodgy's flow and skill when it comes to rapping. He flows flawlessly through the fast beat with clever lyrics yet again. "Igotagun" (C'mon now guys...) is another fantastic song from the album. Just like Deaddeputy, it shows off Hodgy's and Left Brain's writing, along with the great flow Hodgy possesses.
"*** the Police" (Stylized as 'F666 the Police', clever guys.....) features OF leader, Tyler, The Creator. This song features everyone (Hodgy, Left Brain, and Tyler) all rapping individual parts, and if flows together fantastically. The chorus is kind of annoying, but still great. Rico features OF member Frank Ocean, who is actually an R&B singer. He doesn't fit nearly as well as he does on "She" (By Tyler, The Creator), and almost brings the song down in a way. The final track, "Circus" is a great way to end the album. It has a beat where you can't tell if it's portraying a happy, or sad mood. Left Brain does a great job rapping his part.
MellowHype deserves just as much recognition as Tyler and Earl of OF. Definitely check out this album.
