Alabaster's soundoff perfectly encompasses my thoughts. I would describe this album as just one big jam. It seems it is based almost purely around piano-improvisation. It is a lot of fun, but also explores very little new material.

Evidently, Inventions And Dimensions was recorded with improvisation in mind, but improvising using conventional melodies and rhythms rather than just whatever the mind could conjure. The result is kind of uneventful. Pleasant, certainly, but uneventful. The tracks that bookend the album are excellent, however, as the endless piano flourishes flow freely on the steady bass of Paul Chambers. The middle three are somewhat of an exercise in patience, but the Latin-inspired percussion on these tracks is interesting in that it gives the album a totally unexpected feel. It does stand to note, though, that even though one may feel this experiment didn't yield much, it is very indicative of Herbie Hancock's forward-thinking nature that made him one of the greatest minds and artists jazz has ever had the pleasure to see. His next album would be phenomenal evidence of that, but this one is also proof.
