Review Summary: Whoa, slow down.
After their unsettling masterpiece Wunschkind, OOMPH! decided to go into another direction. First of all, they left Dynamica and got signed to Virgin. In their Virgin-era, OOMPH! produced three albums that got them into other fields than they were before. Unrein was the first album of the era, so let's see what we get here.
Although Unrein was stil in the vein of Wunschkind, this album showed that they would go into a more "mainstream" direction. The guitars were heavy as ever, but they rocked a lot more than they riffed. They make you want to dance than mosh, which allowed them to get more and more melody in their songs. Best example are the half-ballad title-track and the frantic "My Hell". They also showed a progressive influence on this album, as seen on the absolute highlight "Bastard". I can't really describe the song, just, listen to it, you will see what I mean. They also had three songs on this album which were almost "radio-ready". I'm talking about "Unsere Rettung", "Gekreuzigt" (which they remade later because it was a big fan-favourite) and the synth-ballad "Foil". If I want to describe my impression on the music of this album, I would have to say "This album totally rocks my socks off!".
Let's talk about the lyrics. The lyrics here are very, very good. They are crey critical. Most of this album critizes the church. I don't always share the point of view by them, but I get what point they are trying to make. If my ressources are correct, they even are christians.
To make a long story short:
Awesome album after "Wunschkind", very danceable, very good lyrics.
Final point breakdown:
Music: 4,5/5
Lyrics: 4,5/5
Final score: 4,5/5
Check this album out, doesn't matter which kind of music you prefer.
