Review Summary: Wishes they were a Blind Guardian cover band.
Savage Circus is a side project from the drummer of Blind Guardian. This is a funny fact simply because the singer of this band sounds almost exactly like the singer from Blind Guardian. He has a coarse, powerful voice, and brings the harmonization you would expect from the Blind Guardian singer. And of course this is a power metal album, so it obviously follows that this sounds like a Blind Guardian album. The lyrics about the horsemen of the apocalypse only furthers the illusion. Clearly, this album wasn’t needed, but it’s a decent time. The singer brings massive gusto to his role, and the instrumental sections and solos are rather classy. The bridges are especially interesting - they are longer than expected and add a lot of colour to the overall mood. But that’s where the excitement ends.
The album is generic as all Hell. Look at that album cover for ***’s sake. If that doesn’t scream generic *** I don’t know what does. The other issue, and the final nail in the coffin, is the terrible sound quality. This was released in 2009, but it nearly sounds on par with Iron Maiden’s original recordings of Powerslave in 1984. In conclusion, if you want to hear a slightly worse version of Blind Guardian, with an album that sounds like it was recorded on a flip phone, this album is for you. At the very least, the power metals are certainly full of triumphant, powery, Oden-be-praised power metal.
