Youth is a factor in music which more often than not, yields negative results. We are always under the assumption that artists seem to grow with age; maybe not necessarily for the better, but in such a way that the maturation is obvious. Sing it Loud’s sophomore release
Everything Collide, is an attempt to prove the aforementioned statement by these Minneapolis pop-punkers. The group’s debut
Come Around was very much a testament to their youthful age; the awful and colorful album art, horribly generic song titles and lyrics, and vocals that have the capability of wetting the pants of a 13-year old girl. Even with all of that said however, Sing it Loud had potential. There was this fresh energy that is not easily replicated among the band’s more experienced contemporaries; a liveliness which gave hope to an already condemned sub-genre. Sing it Loud was in the shadow of Motion City Soundtrack at the time, for John Cain had produced their EP in March of 2008 and had been paving the band’s way to success. Unfortunately, this Minneapolis quartet should have paid more attention.
Whichever way you put it,
Come Around was only two years ago. The group’s 2010 installment exposes the band’s most ubiquitous issue; their limitations. Lead singer Pat Brown had already established his capability to write a cheerful and adolescent piece with the band’s debut, but appears inept of going any further.
Everything Collide gives only additional verification of this, disclosing the pitfall of a band that, to put delicately; is not that talented. The result is an atrociously conventional pop-punk album that neither comes off as intriguing nor inspired in any regard. The three-chord progression and A-B-A song structure is utilized at an alarming, and quite frankly exhausting rate that might make Hinder out to be a tolerable group. Oh, and did I mention the lyrics? The record’s fifth track essentially sums up the extent of the band’s songwriting.
“And I, I'm addicted to when you're gone , So just listen up closely, If you think that you have me all figured out, well you're wrong. And these guys are supposed to be more mature?
If you’re searching for a solid pop record, this isn’t the place to find it.
Everything Collide does not bring anything to the table that you haven’t heard ten thousand times before, and is the consequence of a band that apparently does not know what growing up is. The tight production and “catchy” atmosphere is overshadowed by unspeakably pedestrian music and songwriting, not to mention the nauseating vocals. Sing it Loud wants you to believe they’ve changed, hell they want to indicate that the adorable little kids from Minneapolis are no longer. Seriously, don’t tell people you’ve matured when you actually haven’t hit puberty yet. I mean,
Everything Collide? The title doesn’t even make sense.
