2.5 Nick!!! wtf... anyway.
Musicians studying counterpoint can find plenty of other Bach to digest and disect, and sure, this might not be his most tantalising piece. However, it's a brief body of mystifying music that shows the pure capability of the church organ before it got bastardised into playing only at weddings. Despite others like Camille Saint-Saens (particularly his Organ Smyphony) and Olivier Messiaen (his La nativite du seigneur suite) later having their own magical prowess, Bach's ability here to show exactly how the organ is quite possibly the only natural instrument that can voice almost all others is easily the most distinguishable to listeners worldwide from the work's opening mordent. Not only does it resonate like a tuba and carry like a flute, it also saws like a violin, and squeals like a trumpet. Ironically, these rich harmonics also make it one of the most difficult to control instruments; Bach doesn't seem to be affected by this, adding melodic accompaniment in places where it seemingly would be impossible to fit.

How something so wildly experimental and with so much dissonance could have been composed in the first decade of the 1700s is beyond what I can properly express. The intro to the toccata alone needs no introduction or further clarification - you've heard it, you've seen it used in every scary movie scene imaginable, you've already formulated thoughts on it. The fugue is excellent in its own right, too. The piece stands out from its contemporaries so wildly that it seems almost too good to be true - was the toccata simply better preserved or written down in more detail than others of the era, or was it simply that much more impactful? Impossible to really say, but it's a classic for a reason.

Personally, the best interpretation of this piece is done by Miklos Spanyi. If you're looking up "Halloween music," you'll hear lightning and thunder before you hear this piece which really suits the background of a stormy night.

one of those epic compositions everyone knows even if they dont know they know it. at times dramatically intense, at others playfully lofty, bach gonna rip yo shit long after all your nude muddle is long forgotten

rIt?s crazy how amazing a 1h piece solely for the organ still is to this day. Bach is a master composer and I?m fine with this being his magnum opus and his only composition here. It has stood the test of time and is still one of the most iconic classical pieces ever. And it?s so much more than Toccata. Passacaglia and Fugue, the first part is as good, if not better in my opinion than the iconic one. When you think about it, isn?t it crazy how it?s still talked about 300 years after its release. Do you think Dababy wrote Suge and thought to himself, in 300 years people will still listen to that? r

So good. The toccata especially is so well composed. The eerie dissonant intro into beautiful arpeggios. Fugue is brilliant as well, and this would easily get a higher core if it were longer.

Toccata and Fugue in D Minor and Air on a G String are my favorite Bach songs. Hard not to love Bach music! There are upbeat songs to get you pumped up and the slow songs when you want to relax.
