Review Summary: It appears 2010 was a good year for metal after all.

Profound Lore Records had produced an album for yet another mucky death metal act last year which was somewhat overlooked by many metal fans in favour of works from its brothers: Impetuous Ritual, Mitochondrion and Portal. To introduce a perspective into the fray (one year late) let me introduce you to Vasaeleth, and their stunning debut album Crypt Born and Tethered to Ruin...

Vasaeleth are:
-O.A.: All instruments and vocals (Judging by this album, responsible for most of Vasaeleth’s musical impetus).
-Antinom: Drums.

Crypt Born and Tethered to Ruin is, in short, occult as hell. With its brutally low guttural vocals, thick old school guitar riffs, and wall of drum beats working in the background, this low-production album invokes a dense and hellish atmosphere and imagery. Although you’d have to be deaf to not notice the resemblance between their low guttural vocals and thick guitars, and those of Incantation’s, Crypt Born and Tethered to Ruin brings more to the table than just ripping off their fellow American legends by putting great emphasis on atmosphere (which makes this album sound ‘occult’). You could say they sound like an amalgamation of Incantation, Impetuous Ritual, and Funebrarum, perhaps.

Such comparisons have been made by music critics as Vasaeleth aren’t trying any groundbreaking ideas or inventing new sound structures here. This is as much a weakness as it is strength, for by choosing this /uninventive/ path, the album attempts to expand on established sounds and provide a more convincing experience for its listeners, to which due credit must be given. Another aspect of this album that faces the same situation is the fact that there is little emphasis on individual riffs which is again dependent on your tastes. By focusing on one sound style with no real catchy riffs and risking the chance of its music fading to the background, the album ensures consistency of its sound and amplifies the atmosphere, consolidating its densely sinister nature. Me, I’m certainly leaning towards the ‘strengths’ here, and besides, while these riffs may all sound murky and unprocessed, they are at no stage boring, and anyone with a decent attention span will have no trouble enjoying this album.

This is is some seriously good death metal guys, so I definitely recommend you fans of this murky low-fi type of death metal that haven’t checked it out to do so asap.

4.5/5.

first paragraph is kind of unnecessary, by praising the label over the band and speaking so much about sputnik not checking it out when all the people that know their stuff have heard it.

the rest of the review doesnt say much (apart from the comparison to incantation) that helps somebody get an idea of the music, its just a lot of satanic hyperbole that has been in countless other metal reviews before. try describing the music without mentioning a chunk of flesh bleeding from its pores (pores are part of your skin, just saying) and maybe people will take it seriously.

in three paragraphs you succeeded in using the word "occult" no less than 50 times

atmosphere is evil, production is muddy, length is curt. great album

An occult death-metal band that blows Mitochondrion out of the water (err...shrine).

Why are you even comparing? So what if they're on the same label. I would beef this review up and get rid of the Profound Lore jerk fest, save it for your blog.

Also, why would someone add this album again to the database?

and it's not like im making the most unreasonable comparison here - another band from the same label
with a rather similar direction that gets all the praise at this moment. Mentioning Profound Lore
here is nothing more than a personal preference as they've been the guys that've been producing
these murky metal for the past few years.

will do some edits, thanks.

profound lore are releasing not producing, and there have been many, many other labels putting out such metal. mitochondrion and vasaeleth arent the best comparison either considering vasaeleth have a much more primitive old school sound whereas mitochondrion have the war and blackened aspects to their sound.

I agree with Wiz on the whole beefing it up thing. And definitely get rid of the Mitochondrion namedrop in the summary.

they are distant cousins, at best, in that they both do go for the unrefined and low-fi dm sound to
create this certain kinda atmosphere.

i don't think my reference (or jerk-off as you guys have put it) to profound lore is that fallacious
here at all. its done for a specific purpose: to compare this band with three of its low-fi-murky-
sounding-metal bands that are the most popular for this purpose in sputnikmusic.com. I'm simply
trying to make it more accessible to my audience (that is, sputnik) and laying off hints for them to
make connections, for i believe such connections are neither unreasonable nor shallow.

there isn't a huge lot i have missed so i don't think i'm adding in more words

Yeah, but since you're comparing them to all the bands, you shouldn't just single out Mitochondrion in the summary. If you mentioned all 3 it would look a little bit better.

Mitochondrion is the only band that has produced such album most recently, so it's again just a contextual thing. Guess it won't really matter if I erase it.

Content wise I think the review is ok, though i must admit the presentation isnt too fancy or detailed. May do a re-write sometime if there is still no other reviews for this.
