Moving from the instrumental sound of their first record, Broken Social Scene also made a drastic change to their lineup and went from a small two man band to a 10 person (not including guests) lineup. Featuring some new people and more famous and well known members such as Emily Haines (Metric), Charles Spearin (Do Make Say Think), Evan Cranley (Stars) and Leslie Feist (Feist), You Forgot It In People takes a few steps away from Feel Good Lost and shows a diversity on one record that most bands couldn't accomplish in their entire career.

More than anything else, You Forgot It In People is a diverse record. Unlike Feel Good Lost, this is a guitar fueled album, albeit one with strings, brass and electronic experiments all over the place. There is a lot going on in each song, which is to be expected from a band with 10 members who all take an active role. The influence of most members' original bands seeps through, creating a well rounded and original sound. The sheer amount of instruments throughout the album is also to be commended, the aforementioned strings, brass, drum loops and electronics make welcome appeareances, along with the standard, guitars, drums, basses, vocals (there are at least 4 vocalists) and some less standard instruments such as banjos, saxophones and flutes. The album is broken up by instrumental tracks that serve as interludes causing the album to be a massive 13 tracks.

Possibly the best thing about You Forgot It In People is that it really does have something for everyone. Fans of rock bands such as The Strokes will find much to like in songs such as "Stars and Sons" and "Almost Crimes" while fans of calmer, post-rock stylings will appreciate "Anthems For A Seventeen Year Old Girl" and "Pitter Patter Goes My Heart". There is even a laid back, surf style song in the form of "Looks Just Like The Sun". At first, You Forgot It In People may appear to be a sprawling and inconsistant mess. However, this is only really because there is so much going on that it takes quite a few listens to absorb everything. In fact, there is so much going on that it's not surprising to hear new things on the fifth, sixth or twentieth listen. While the huge lineup and large range of sounds can be irritating at first, it is extremely rewarding for patient listeners. You Forgot It In People, while large and at times overwhelming is an excellent album for those who are prepared to put in the effort.

Pros
Replayability
Good songwriting
Great range of stylings

Cons
Hard to listen to at first
Requires patience
Some will find it inconsistant

Reccomended Tracks
Almost Crimes
Looks Just Like The Sun
Anthems For A Seventeen Year Old Girl

I was searching for this band like 2 seconds ago and nothing showed up.. then I saw this up the top of the featured list. Seems you missed out the band name.

Anyway, regarding the cons, I totally agree with the first two. A year after I got this album, I still have trouble listening to the harder tracks (2, 3, 4 and 8). Maybe I just never will like those styles as much.

The songs I liked on the first listen are still the ones I like the most. I think Looks Just Like The Sun is one of my favourite songs ever, it's just so relaxing. I also like Lover's Spit a fair bit.

Feel Good Lost was only 2 people?

Yeah, I've tried entering in the band name 4 times (including when I first did the review) and it just isn't working.

Looks Just Like The Sun is my favourite song on here, especially when the vocalist says "here we go" and it changes to that really pretty riff. I also think 'Almost Crimes' is a big pwn of The Strokes, as if to say "we can write one of your songs, but 10 times better".

Maybe the name isn't working because MX originally reviewed this, but he must have deleted it and the band name with it... its one for the forums.

Almost Crimes sounds ok musically, but it's way too noisy for me to enjoy any more. I'll listen to the others properly to see if I can find another way into them.

A little more detail would be great, out of that it is a great album.

I must admit this might be one of your weakest reviews yet. Shocking since you're the top ranked person on the site.

I actually thought that the review was short and to the point which is a good thing.

I listened to a few of these songs and thought they were just dull... but that's just me.

This album is far too massive to go into great detail on. If I had done that, this would be a 1000 word review, useless to anyone who hasn't heard the album.

Sounds like something i'd really enjoy, i'll go look for it tomorrow.

I like this review, doesnt give away the whole darn album, but keeps you interested all the same, and gives the reader a good idea of what to expect.

Br3ad Man, have you heard of a band called Saddleback?

They're a really mellow/instrumental/ambient group from sydney. I have 'everything's a love letter' and that's a really nice album. Most of their stuff is based around cool piano melodies, its really chilled.

I think you'd like em'. I'd give you some songs to dload but i dont think anyone would be able to find them on the web. This Message Edited On 10.26.05
