Richie Rich is a rapper from Oakland, who parlayed high profile guest spots with 2Pac and the Luniz into a contract with Def Jam, and he was the first and only Bay Area rapper to ever be signed to the label. He was also part of the up & coming group 415 back in the early 90?s, but went on vacation for a few years. Rich has a very distinct, raspy voice, and is at his best when he's flowing slow over a smooth instrumental. When he switches up his flow or tone (the 2Pac/Rick Rock collab "N!gg@z Done Changed" & the awful "Real Shit") the results are a mixed bag. He is a game spitting emcee, but his rhymes are pretty much always very bad, like to the point where it distracts from the message. Street talk can be done well, but RR?s wordplay just doesn't cut it. The beats are pretty funky, nothing too bad on here, as DJ Daryl, Lev Berlak and Rich himself create familiar sounding beats but things are way more nuanced and fleshed out than they were on Half Thang. Most of the best songs are ones with guests, and while Rich gets washed by the likes of E-40 ("It's On"), 2Pac & The Luniz (the excellent "Questions"), they do seem to motivate him to do something other than find the 2 corniest possible words to rhyme, and he has great chemistry with them. It's also pretty dope to get D'wayne Wiggins himself to remake his group Tony! Toni! Tone!s "Pillow" into a fun weed anthem. There's enough good songs on here to be worth a listen, but Seasoned Veteran is not that memorable.
