Review Summary: Ad Nauseum, Doof Infinitum

If ever there was an album to cherry pick your favourite tracks from then it's this sophomore effort from the always lovable Lillies. As usual the band are one step ahead of their listeners, the very title of this collection hinting that they're perfectly aware that with this release they're giving their audience way more material than they strictly desire/require. Still, 24 tracks included here and so as long as the band hit the mark on, oh, half these songs, then we're in business.

In fact their hit rate is a little over 50% here, with about ten strong songs forming a firm foundation onto which a quartet of damn near essential tunes are sprinkled. As per usual it's the most ridiculously offensive songs that provide the biggest rewards; indeed 'Ad Nauseum', perhaps more than any other Tiger Lillies album, is played for laughs and sick kicks.

The grimly paced 'Shoot Your Load' concerns a cynical whore who possesses 'big tits for the gits' and spends most of her time despairing about the number of soiled rubbers she has to throw of a night. 'Jesus' is the quintessential blasphemous Lillies song imagining the second coming of our Lord and Saviour, where he ends up in hospital dosed up on 'lots of drugs because they're f'cking good for you!' and finally turns blue after sleeping rough in an underpass near Waterloo; this is one of the only times where they left Jacques nearly collapsing into laughter on the recording they ended up using. Equally amusing is the chain of consciousness ranting of 'Murder' which contains the all time classic chorus of 'murder is easy, murder is fun, it's better than sex, I always cum'. Hey, don't knock it until you've tried it and all that.

Other random highlights include 'Bumhole' which seems to point the brown stained finger of blame at the French for nuclear testing in Polynesia and causing the local populace to be born with, ahem, 'sealed up back doors'; then there's 'Whore' which builds to a perfect final 30 seconds where Jacques sings 'my twisted heaaart' like he's just stepped on a particularly angular lego brick; and not to forget the rabid opener 'Larder' about a husband who preserves his dead wife for posterity in the pantry. So yes, guilty as charged, the Lillies are peddling yet more of the same old inspired nonsense.

Is 'Ad Nauseum' the band's most unrefined and borderline scrappy release? Almost certainly. Does it nonetheless boast a chaotic mongrel charm all its own? You bet. Is it better than sex? Down to personal taste but it always makes me cum anyway.

Oh sure, you let the Lillies get away with 50% decent, but if my Magnetic Fields stumble on a track or two, you give them a "1".

I'm saying over 50% is great or essential...the rest is still good, I mean it's the Lillies.

Magnetic Fields won't stay on a 1, that is a little dirty protest at the silly man releasing two and a half hours of music when I've already suffered through the 69'er travesty.

Right now I rate 100 Tiger Lillies songs over ANY Magnetic Fields song I've heard - someone needs to point me towards an actually phenomenal song Merritt has written because so far nothing is living up to the hype.

these are so awkward yet funny to read. what kind of site lets a 37 yr old write like this and maintain, not ONLY a 100% objectivity, but a title as a serious "contributor" for the site?

As for me Doof, a little over half a tracklisting beibg great sounds pretty meh tbh. Like a 3.0. But hey, you'vr heard it and I haven't so I can't judge

14 great songs is quite a lot, I don't rate albums on the average quality of songs but what they give me as an overall experience - this album has 35 minutes or so of absolute quality stuff, that's a 4/5 all day

This is my least favourite of all the Lillies albums I've reviewed so far and later in the week I'll be putting up a 4.5-5 review of 'Circus Songs'

I have to admit, I haven't listened to the Lillies yet -- you said on one of the first reviews you did of one of their albums (the one with all of the freak show imagery and the comment about poking the woman in the cage to make her bleed), that if I found the description fairly horrifying I probably wouldn't enjoy the band, so I took you at your word.

I had a totally different reaction to "69 Love Songs" -- liked about two thirds of the material, but different strokes. (I still say Merritt's best vehicle is Future Bible Heroes, though -- I expect to be reviewing another one from them within the next few days).

Anyway, just busting chops, as usual. (I'm still voting for you for staff, which might be what they're holding against you).

Diva - I'm probably being grossly unfair on MF and I'll end up eating my words/ratings soon enough. In more positive news I enjoyed the Jefferson Airplane and of course recognised the two 'hits' on that album.

AitB - this review was a 30 minute quick write up, hoping the next one will be a bit more fleshed out. 'Circus Songs' is really intriguing, an almost 'sophisticated' and 'refined' album by their standards.

FoS - sweet tag

So Doof, as much as you like the Tiger Lillies, are you a fan of "Threepenny Opera"?

Diva - as I've been saying before, this sort of thing isn't usually my bag really, but now after listening to so much of the band's material who knows? I might like it, I'll definitely seek out some similar stuff once I've finished this discog.

Thanks TVC and Dewi, I'll be more specific on my next tag too I promise
