3.0 good | Alabaster Jones | January 16th 17 | This is how power metal should be: entertaining. Doesn't matter what route you take to get there just as long as you end up there. The route Victorius takes on Heart Of The Phoenix is the same route they've always taken: completely over-the-top in almost every regard, yet charmingly self-aware. Compositionally it's more or less your standard power metal, just cranked up to eleven, which means it's faster, louder, and more ridiculous, and definitely not for the lack of instrumental or vocal talent on display. The riffs alternate between being pretty decently written (each song has at least one legitimately good riff) to hammering out the cheesiest melodies the guitarists can think of, with tongues firmly in cheeks the whole time. The drummer even tries his hand at it, rising up over everything to place blast beats and random fills occasionally. All of this makes the album a very entertaining one, even if it's not original. It's just a bunch of dudes having fun, really.
