Monolithic Blackened-Death that diverts from the expected Icelandic hell cyclone approach to black metal and opts for a songwriting style focused on scale, detail and bleakness. Honestly it's quite refreshing to see a something a bit less twisted to come out of the booming scene happening there, as it cements the notion that Iceland might be the new Norway when it comes to black metal and styles associated with it.

Highly recommended for all black metal fans or fans of music that just sounds pure EVIL! There are a ton of fantastic melodies on this record that give it quite a haunting vibe.

This year's most derivative metal record is also the most instantly gratifying. Pretty easy to spin and enjoy in any mood or scenario.

Initially, I was expecting this album to be similar to the Ad Nauseam record from last year, but what I got was something that leans much more towards the atmospheric and slow-burning. This Icelandic quartet is suffocating black metal mixed with eerie and tense post-metal in an instrumental sense, while vocally being influenced heavily from death metal. The songs sometimes pull a hardcore influence out in isolated places, like after the first minute of "The Syringe Dance", and the all around feel of the tracks is very organic. The songwriting is generally very good, and while their might not be a standout track on the record, all of the songs here are great and flow with each other excellently. The production is quite varied, having a briskness to the guitars and drums during the black metal sections while also adding a more clean, airy sound to the instruments and the background during the post-metal passages. It's one more excellent metal album that Reykjavik has to its name.

Some truly gnarly atmospheric blackened death metal happening here. To my great surprise a debuting collective managed to string together some ambitious harmonic and instrumental vision that doesn't drag, doesn't have low point too deep, doesn't feel particularly indebted to any specific influence. Fresh, hellish metal record. More like this, please.

Saw these guys with Ulcerate in Chicago and was blown away. This record rips souls in a similar vein to Ulcerate and Deathspell Omega. Atmospheric blackened death with an upright bass! Plus the dudes in the band are very cool. Always a plus.
