Review Summary: Ornette meets God
Many people already are well aware of who Ornette Coleman is, and that his contributions to jazz are considered essential to the very crafting of the genre. With this being stated, I would like to keep this review as short as I can, and let this incredible music speak for itself. It will speak, trust me.
What Coleman does on Science Fiction is nothing short of unbelievable. First of all he acquires this "golden" set of absolutely mindboggling players. They are all empathetic to eachother's playing and it is fascinating and awe inspiring to listen to it as it unfolds. Ornette commands the group with the power of a God, and everyone seems to become a divine being as a result. Seriously the atmosphere created by the players needs to be heard to be believed.
This album is enigmatic in Ornette's discography. Like its title would suggest, it is prophetic and futuristic. You know this for sure when you hear the songs "Rock the Clock" and "Science Fiction", a song where Ornette proclaims, "My mind belongs to civilization" in a robotic voice as hyberblasting drums fall at the speed of a maglev behind him along with frantic blastings of instrumentation. Don't miss out on this album. Here, at least to me, is where Ornette becomes a prophet and truly comes face to face with what some would call God.
