Review Summary: Legions is a mere shadow of the band that was once called Artillery. Artillery were once considered cutting edge developers of the thrash metal movement of the 1980's. Solid albums such as Fear of Tomorrow and By Inheritance cemented Artillery's reputation as a legitimate player in the thrash scene and captivated thrash fans worldwide with the idea that thrash didn't have to be by the books and conventional, thanks to the band's unique and fascinating style. So why has this album, the band's latest effort, received such little attention? The answer to that question is quite simple; because of change.
In spite of being well over twenty years removed from their most critically successful album, Artillery still demonstrate their inherent ability to pummel the listener with explosive guitar work filled with clever riffing and skillful soloing. While certainly nowhere near as technical as 1989's By Inheritance, Legions will get the job done for most casual thrash fans instrumentally, thanks to the aforementioned guitars and some well done and occasionally inventive drumming all backed by modern production values. But one thing fans of the band will notice immediately, is the voice of a new vocalist. While the new vocalist gives a considerably strong effort, the vocals aren't very unique and one gets the sense that he is trying perhaps a bit too hard. Throughout much of the album I imagined what Legions would sound like with the band's old school vocalist Flemming Ronsdorf, and after some rather serious consideration, came to the conclusion that the band would be much better as whole with their old frontman. However, listeners are instead stuck with the decent but nonetheless bland vocal effort of new frontman Michael Dahl who specializes in a clear singing voice devoid of any aggressive shouts or snarls.
The reason this album won't be hailed as Artillery's comeback, or even their return to form, is the very same reason that Legions is unlikely to garner many new fans; simply put, Artillery decided to scrap most of that signature high energy, fast paced and melodic style of songwriting that made them a successful act in the past, in favor of a slower and more modern style. The final product that's left behind is an album that sounds stripped down and repetitive to a fault. One wouldn't be too off-base by calling Artillery's newest album “Run of the mill” or even “By the numbers”, because it more or less is.

It really pained me to write up such a negative sounding review for this. I dig By Inheritance so much. I know this band is capable of so much more.

Good review though tbh I thought the vocalist was one of the highlights of this cd. Reminds me of Charles Sabine in terms of tone.

I think that the vocalist here does a pretty decent job, but he has some rather big shoes to fill as far as I'm concerned. Flemming was the best vocalist for this band IMO.

Yes, I got their first three albums when they were reissued, awesome stuff.
Before getting their albums, I had caught Artillery on the radio, in a time when there was no internet, and wondered about their identity, because radio producers rarely mentioned the band playing on their decks.
Later on, I found out who they were, but then I couldn't find physical copies of their albums haha.

I've been hearing this off and on through iTunes radio. Wasn't impressed.

Good review, but if I didn't know any better it would give me the impression that this is their first record in more than twenty years, while in fact they've been active again since 2007 and put out new studio work twice before this. Some more comparison with When Death Comes and My Blood (both already featuring a vocalist different from Ronsdorf) couldn't hurt.
Anyway, just my two cents. Album's alright. It's a shame that it isn't as enjoyable as the previous two.

While I was aware of the new material from a couple years back, I never actually listened to it. This
was the first I had heard from these guys since By Inheritance. I'm not sure if that makes this
review any less legitimate, but there it is.
And damn that summary is terrible... I was sick and running a fever when I wrote this, that would be
my excuse for any errors here, lol
