I really dig the production here, as well as a few of the guitar leads. But there's little here that stays with me-- I'd really like to hear Elitist take on a style more akin to Erra, because some of the guitar parts here remind me of them. But I don't think Elitist wants to be anything bigger than the derivative (but fun) djent group they are. And I'm not sure I should fault or respect them for that.

While not the disaster I thought it was going to be, Between the Balance definitely lives up to its name in the sense that it combines that typical djent sound with that typical "Rise" sound. So even though what you end up with is probably the most unoriginal thing you have ever heard, Elitist manage to pull it off well.

I really wanted to love this EP. After hearing Reshape | Reason, and thoroughly enjoying it
since it was chock-full of awesome riffing and metal in general, Elitist's Between the
Balance comes off as a bit boring and maybe even tired. The mix muffles the drumming,
killing the music's power a little. There is also more of an emphasis on clean vocal
sections this time around, they sort of sound like slightly less boring Miss May I clean
vocal sections, and slightly less boring isn't really saying much to Elitist's credit. They
seem to have dumbed down and slowed down the frantic pace that they had on the Reshape |
Reason and Caves (and Earth to a lesser extent), ESPECIALLY during the aforementioned clean
sections. Finally, "Echo in the Room" is one of the most boring songs Elitist have released
thus far. However, with all that said, Between the Balance is still not at all bad in terms
of metalcore, and I find myself going back to "Vice Versa" every now and then, which is the
highlight of this EP. But fans of more *progressive* metal will be a bit disappointed by
the band's technical regression.

Another disappointing release. I think it's about time i give up on this band, everything they have released
after Caves has been absolute garbage and yet i still keep coming back hoping they'll write something
within the same realm/level of caves. I'm not asking for another Caves but write something that is
melodically/technically interesting to listen to. This does infact sound like a band off Rise records, what a
shame.

Better than Caves, worse than Earth & Reshape Reason. Dunno what is happening to their vocals though - they seem to change heavily from CD to CD. Caves was very hardcoreish, Earth crazy brutal/low and since one year we mostly get this half-high Northlane-like screams. No one can change his fronter this often. I guess he must have gotten out of puberty or something... Overall an interesting release that mixes Djent with Metal and Metalcore without getting too generic, always pulling something like a solo, melodic keys or the like off the cuff. Even while not catching me to a one hundred per cent degree at all times, Between The Balance definitely marks their most versatile and mature effort yet.
