The controversial vaporwave phenomenon intrigues me as a whole; tasteful sampling in any genre can be a wonderful experiment in aural texture, and the problem with vaporwave is that usually the experimentation is not well executed enough to create a cohesive end product. This glaring problem is remedied majestically and with a ton of flare on the album "Hit Vibes," as Ryan DeRobertis (the Pepsi Saint himself) splices together thirteen lush tracks of the best serious vaporwave the genre has to offer. The grand parody of corporatism is out of the limelight as Saint Pepsi chooses to instead concentrate fully on creating actual music with his arsenal of sounds, and on "Hit Vibes" almost every detail is honed to truly capture the spirit of the genre. Given out for free on Bandcamp and emblazoned with a minimalist and unassuming album art, this is the ultimate perversion of the corporate spirit, and it's all done in the most enjoyable and downright funky way possible. Crooning vocals are shredded and superimposed over a smooth saxophone-riddled and synth-layered soundscape, as bombastic blast beats punctuate throughout. The melodies are danceable, the ambiance is groovy and fluid, and "Hit Vibes" definitively proves itself to be a collection of very jazzy feel-good vibes. A hit indeed.
