Review Summary: A splendid electro album, full of atmosphere and galactic-styled emotion.
One of the best new-wave Japanese electro artists out there has to be Tessei Tojo. Young and full of insight, Tessei has been all over the internet, releasing various demos and bareboned tracks that had tremendous potential. In 2012, 24-year-old Tessei finally released his first full length album, "My Little Beautiful", which explored various types of spacey rhythms, and, arguably, proved to be one of the most solid albums of 2012. A huge breakthrough for the young artist.
Throughout the album, "My Little Beautiful" explores atmospheric elements, bound together with a highly effective electro filling, making the album a phenomenal one. One of the best examples of its atmospheric style would be the opening track, "Ambiguous Reality", which follows a creepily progressive sound, and then blasts off into the electronic nebula with a D&B-fronted breakdown. A splendid track that shows the young artist's creative ability. "Innocence" further pushes the young artist's impressive talents to previously unseen levels, and follows a pattern of an oozing, chugging bass-fronted style, slightly effected by a glitch influence. "Indivisual Truth" is a splendidly well done track that follows an unorthodox drum beat, and is covered head-to-toe in wonderfully addictive spacey licks, with atmosphere gushing all over the place. Another one of the album's most creative tracks has to be "Kikori", which, similarly, also follows a slightly unorthodox drum beat, and is practically covered in melodic jingles and layered with a fluttery bass line. The album's closing track, "My Abstract", follows a more straightforward breakdown, and has a downtempo feel to it, with fat bass lines and fluttery synth lines adding a nice drowned feeling to the track.
Needless to say, "My Little Beautiful" tops in creative levels, with various influences and styles explored within the 10-track long album. And with an overwhelming amount of atmosphere added to the album, it gives off a unique, breath of fresh air in the modern Japanese electronic scene. The only artist that can be compared to Tessei Tojo would be De De Mouse, due to the occasional distorted stylings of some of the tracks, and the glitch-influence in various tracks. But even that would be a stretch. Without a doubt, Tessei Tojo proved himself to be one of the most impressive figures in the modern-day electronica scene with "My Little Beautiful", an album that creatively contorts atmosphere with a glitchy and galactic backbone.
