Review Summary: Atlas Genius release an EP that offers a promising career.
With indies recently rise to popularity, there has been a flood of bands trying to make it big in the indie scene. Some bands succeed, and with critical acclaim, such as Foals. While some fail to leave an impact, and only achieve short-term success. And now, there's Atlas Genius. A fairly new band formed in South Australia, who have steadily been increasing in popularity. They have already toured with the likes of Silversun Pickups, with only three songs and an EP under their belt. This EP is a very good showcase of what the band can do.
Through The Glass begins with lead single “Trojans”. A simple drum beat and guitar pattern paves the way for Keith Jeffrey's wonderful vocals. Jeffrey's vocals are the main focus of the band, sounding like a mixture of Jesse Lacey of Brand New and Anthony Caleb of Kings of Leon, and he crafts catchy melodies that will embed themselves in your head. The album itself is versatile, and every song has a different feel to it. From the catchy “Trojans” to the groovy “Back Seat”, nothing on this album sounds alike. The guitar work on this album is subtle, yet very effective. It lends itself very well to Jeffrey's singing and the overall atmosphere in the songs. If you are looking for technical or impressive guitar, you are better off looking elsewhere.
“Symptoms” is the obvious standout on the album. With a bassline that grooves in the background, and the best guitar playing out of the three songs, it truly is a great song. If Atlas Genius can continue to craft songs similar to this one, they can have a very successful career. “Trojan (Acoustic)” is a very great take on the original version, offering a more intimate and meaningful version.
While Atlas Genius may not be the most original band ever, they do what they do extremely well. Through The Glass is a phenomenal EP and sets the band's future very promising. For fans of the genre, it's easily worth the purchase. If they can stray from becoming too repetitive or too boring, they can have a very successful career. Pick this up. You won't regret it.
