"Oh Fleshgod are definitely death metal, they're just recently way too reliant on their orchestral arrangements to carry the weight of their sound, rather than writing riffs and songs that could stand on their own. They're basically the Dimmu Borgir of dm."

This so hard, also this has aged horrendously. Gangrene is definately the superior effort.

I don't like Fleshgod either but early Septicflesh is cool.

I enjoy Septic much more but still not perfect. They actively embrase their orchestra as a part of their sound rather than a crutch, although there's better.

Well that's sort of the point. The orchestra isn't suppose to just be some added exclamation or passage or gimmick. It's an actual intergral part of the music. Personally I like what they do but bleh

Oh, and after running into this, Gangrene is only ok. Good but this kick ass in my book.

You missed our collective point entirely. There's a difference between using it as a crutch and embrasing it as a natural part of their sound. In both cases it's integral to their sound, but how they use them is different. Let's take Fleshgod and Mirrorthrone for example since you're familar with both. Fleshgod make their symphonics essential to their sound but they integrate it with their DM really poorly due to their production and songwriting. They just rely on it to blast *EPICCCCCCCCCCCC* into your face with little structure. You can't make a Symphonic Metal album great by using the same idea over and over and over again. Mirrorthrone do a better job, they integrate it tastefully by attempting to craft songs with more of a lush structure and solid songwriting. Probably the best example of this is 'No One By My Side' where it starts with a single piano, and then adds a guitar passage to fit perfectly with the melody established. Even their 'all out' moments have more variety and purpose to his songs. There's many different ways Symphonic Metal can be bad, using it as a crutch is just a bulletpoint of the over arching problem of bad songwriting.

I don't see how the song writing is poor. And the EPPPPPPPPICCCC! with little structure. That just sounds like the typical step around for "too to process' as opposed to a legitimate issue. I thought the 'structure' was quite apparent but I'm clearly on the wrong side of things.

Septicflesh with their latest outing however is inexcusable.

In terms of a single song my point holds no weight, although their style over an entire album it gets boring fast and it's like they don't know how to create a full album experience very well in my opinion (note I've only listened to Agony), this wouldn't bother me much but I have other problems with them as well. If you legmiately believe in "That just sounds like the typical step around for "too to process' as opposed to a legitimate issue.", then you need to get your head out your arse because that just reaks of "lol I'm superior because I can process this and you can't". I haven't bothered with Septic Flesh's recent album and I don't plan too.

Have you not read the comment on the fleshgod albums here (or anywhere?) The litterally can be chalked up to " RA RA RA, Ew Orchestras, RRA, Where are teh guirtarz, RA EPPPPPIIIIIIIC, RAR WTF is going on and hitting my ears!!?! RARA Dimmu FTW!!!!!. I don't think I'm 'superior' in anyway, but I damn sure believe there is some odd thought process that there is a 'right and wrong' way to do what other believe these bands are trying to do and most of the 'complaints' beckon that.

I just don't feel that way

Yep, some points are valid some are shite. The whole 'eww Symphonic Metal' is beyond me but 'where are teh guitarz' is a valid point, they are completely buried in the mix to the extent it's pointless to even have them. Minus the orchestra and drums nothing else has room to breath, and a bunch of people (including myself) don't like this. The whole Fleshgod concept I spooge over but in execution it's flawed imo.

I agree that if they complain about the entire genre as a conceptual idea, then they shouldn't bother with the band to begin with but alot of these complaints are from people who like Symphonic Metal and see legitimate criticisms with their work.

Perhaps that's a fare enough consensus then. Naturally I have an obtuse love affair with Labyrinth. Aside from issues from a sheer production stand point. Even then I couldn't fathom how one would fix it or do a 'proper' mix that doesn't just kill the intended impact

It's enjoyable, aged really badly though. Better Symphonic Metal out there, Gangrene from this band is one such example.
