Deicide, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse and Pestilence all consider Possessed to be a formative influence. Not to mention the obviously influenced albums like Left Hand Path and Like an Ever Flowing Stream.
I get where you're coming from but if you take it back far enough, both black and death metal was originally rooted in noisy, high speed thrash. That being said, certain bands clearly influenced a specific branch. It wouldn't be far off to say that Bathory's self titled is similar to early death metal records but it would be silly to that Bathory is OSDM.

I'm assuming OSBM stands for Occult Satanic Black Metal...

old school black metal. basically satanic imagery speed metal from the 80s

bathory, venom, mercyful fate, sodom's sign of evil EP, early kreator and destruction, hellhammer, master's ritual, early possessed, mayhem's deathcrush, onslaught's power from hell are all examples of OSBM. it's just a classification for 80s speed metal that has satanic aesthetics. so of course seven churches is an incredibly important OSBM album lol

That was kind of my point. I don't think that Possessed really consider themselves to be 'black metal' and I think self image was a big part of differentiating the two genres way back in the early years.
But yeah you're right. Possessed kick started it all.

I like that the voice sounds like it's coming form down a well or from inside a cave, It makes all the songs sound just so fucking evil!

no question. OSBM is just a retrospective classification to categorize everything easier. because it's weird to call seven churches straight up death metal, or thrash metal, we call it OSBM. same with a lot of other albums that don't totally fit in a certain genre, they become OSBM. think of a real seminal death album, like altars of madness, seven churches is pretty different from that scene, even if they influenced it

I think they did kick things off in a way. I'm not saying they invented the style but before Seven Churches extreme metal was just a lot of different styles and ideas floating around. Possessed really gathered those ideas into one cohesive album and laid the groundwork for everything that would come later.

I mean I won't lie I get 99 percent of everything I know about music from here and this album is always overshadowed by the 'trilogy' albums.

sure dude i've found a lot of good music through this site, but i've also noticed a lot of great albums go unnoticed here

and yeah typically the unholy trilogy is most praised, but panzerfaust is a real king of an album, just takes one thorough listen to notice it. quintessence is life changing
