Their cover of Blackened is ace. The solo has been greatly improved.

Seriously, I'm surprised, I read these reviews way before I heard the cd. I'm listening to it right now and disagree with many of these posts. Some of the songs are pretty close to the orginal, but I can still feel it being BTBAM. Then some of the songs are not so close to the original. I think it's a great cd. Sure I would like another original cd, but they felt like doing a cover cd and I say "way to go."

I'm diggin it, just because I like most of the bands on here, and they keep it true to the original recordings while throwing in little twists that most people wouldn't notice on the first listen. And I'm surprised no one mentioned their killer cover of Malpractice, although seeing Dillinger play it with Mike Patton live is a bit better. 3.5/5

actually I have to say that while most of the cd is rather bad (although i do enjoy most of BTBAM's original material) the covers of "colorblind" "three of a perfect pair" and "bicycle race" are rather good. They aren't turned into metal songs, but rather they stick to the song's original sound.

King Crimson is by far one of my favorite bands, but I have to say that I like BTBAM's cover of "three of a perfect pair" more. Possibly because it gives it has a modern sound, which the benifits the song in this case.

The Blackened cover is so sick it's untrue.

They really do have a mass of influences. This shows it.

Wow. I think the reviewer completely missed the point of this album. You did notice the title, no? "The Anatomy Of..." This was a selection of songs and bands that influenced each of them musically. Of course its going to sound like "an anachronistic version of the metal part of a typical BTBAM song", thats precisely the point. This was a way of expressing their diverse taste and influences, while at the same time opening the(typically closed) minds of the "hardcore" crowd. For someone like Converge to go put "Queen" as one of their influences would be scene suicide. Yet BTBAM is here to show that great music is great music, no matter who made it or when.

I'll agree that at first the track list almost offended me. Not because of any of the songs themselves, I happen to have extremely diverse taste in music, but because it was not at all what I expected. Mostly I was extremely worried they would attempt to manipulate the songs too much. I totally admire the fact that they wanted to keep the songs as they were, adding only the slightest touches of their own. I applaud them for this. "Us and Them" is amazing, as are "Bicycle Race", "Three of a perfect pair", "Color Blind"... I truly love the whole album. Paul's take on Cemetery Gates is outstanding.

I think the assortment of styles is a tribute to music itself. BTBAM are out to break down the boundaries in music. I'm so utterly sick of people labeling music. Screamo, emo, hardcore, metalcore, death metal, black metal, thrash metal... its utterly ridiculous. To quote Guttermouth:

"
skacore
snow core
hardcore
homocore
albacore
can’t take it any more
mycore
your core
thiscore
thatcore
one core
i can’t take it"

Ya, that's what I said.
A cover album featuring songs by bands ranging the gamut of influences that pretty much sum up the BTBAM sound really just reiterates a lot of qualities that BTBAM have already explored in their previous efforts.
The result of that means that album is boring and predictable because of this:
They picked songs that already have the idiosyncratic qualities they have, meaning the songs aren't as much reinterpreted as they are replayed.
the cover of blackened is really really good. I don't think you like their sound or something...

BTBAM is an underated band, but apparently, they aren't for everyone.

Alaska in particular is an incredibly dense and rewarding album in my opinion.

and you can safely assume nothing.

I reviewed this more on a case by case basis. If you look at my ratings of their other albums they are all very high. I love BTBAM, just not this CD.

I really liked Alaska and the s/t album. I have yet to get Silent Circus. I never plan on buying this album though.

I've just given this a listen as a way of easing myself into the band's discography, and you know.....I don't think it's so bad. The fact that I'm not a fan of theirs yet might be helping me make that judgement, but to me this just sounds like a load of good songs being played well, with the occasional metal flourish. I'm a little disappointed that the covers are so straight most of the time, but this still isn't bad stuff.
