I'm starting to think I'm the only one who cares about the difference between independent and major labels

@theBoneyKing okay I'm done ranting, oatmeal is on

I don't know why you would care, what does it matter what label something was released on?

Tons of "indie" labels are owned by the major conglomerates anyways. Where do you draw the line?

@Boney. you can't anymore.. that's why the term bled over.. that's why people rant.. because it isn't just the loss of a precious term.. it's the loss of asceticism and DIY in music making.. i know DIY recording stil happens.. but it used to be THE way.. and it didn't involve laptop software recording.. it was a band of kids desperately recording something in a basement for no money.. anyway, now I'm ranting.. curse you, Sandwich.. i'm bumping this back down..

'indie used to mean Sonic Youth, Dino jr and a ton of other bands that wipe their ass with what is labelled indie now, regardless of genre..'

and before that there were different bands described as indie and people complained about it then too

and regardless what use is the term indie anyway in a purely literal sense. how does being independent make them different? does it mean tehy have a diffferent sound? no, it doesnt - two bands could play near-identical styles, but if one is on a major label and the other isn't then how is the term 'indie' gonna mean anything. its just a trendy thing for bitter old men to whine about and say they're 'sticking it to the man' and such without doing anything meaningful at all because they think it makes them less of a sack of shit

'I'm starting to think I'm the only one who cares about the difference between independent and major labels'

the irony being that most of the original 'indie' labels are major labels now

You can still be DIY to a pretty significant extent even if you're on a major label. I doubt that in most cases bands from indie labels who get signed to major labels often end up with too much internal pressure to make commercial music. And likewise even in indie labels a band could have pressure to sound a certain way. The only way to be truly DIY in your sense is to literally do it all yourself, which virtually nobody does unless you're a fucking bandcamp artist or something.

Totally agreed with Sint. At the end of the day whether you're on an indie label makes no difference. Kid A was released on a major label. Sure nobody calls Radiohead indie rock but obviously any band that releases that album is operating under just as much freedom as anybody on an indie label. Hell, they arguably have more freedom because of access to the label's funds.

Ok Sandwich, I'll qualify that with "anybody that more than 100 people care about".

standards have changed, now that you can record music on your phones and laptops.. I know it's a pointless toil moaning about this, but DIY isn't really DIY anymore.. you used to have to build your own equipment if you couldn't find studio space.. my first band built and wired our own switchboard.. the scene had a charm to it then.. sometimes it sucks that that was lost..

Maybe it meant more pre Internet but post 2000 there is almost no difference between independent and major record labels.

I think the problem is that you guys care too much about things being DIY. Get over it and just listen to the music

Come on guys, how something is made is a trivial detail. This is starting to sound like that fiasco with LoLifant in that HEALTH thread a couple years back.
