It seems like in the time of digital album sales bands should get more, cause their music is just going into mp3 form for 95% of the audience, but I know pirating and file sharing decreases the profits.

in the time of digital consumption musicians earn less off recording sales becuz ppl value music less, even though they might be consuming more of it. ppl used to pay a lot of money for cds or vinyl; the physical aspect of consumption allowed for the attribution of greater value to music products (the physical item was fairly expensive, so you thought of the music as worth the expensive figure which you paid for it). but with piracy, and then streaming later, ppl dont have to pay shit for the music they wanna hear; even if they do, its still a fraction of what they woulda paid in the cd/vinyl/tape age (cost of streaming service membership considering how much music you get access to vs. cost of physical media, which usually gives you access to just one record).

its true that the cost of getting records to consumers can be negligible, but more ppl are gonna listen to the shit for free rather than buy it, whether by streaming or piracy. once more for emphasis, the digital download/streaming age has made music less valuable, so ppl are less inclined to put money into records than they used to, and artists therefore get less money from recordings than they used to.

on the upside, the digital age can be said to have brought about something of a communisation of their music industry. smaller artists can now get way more exposure way easier and way cheaper becuz they can essentially put out their music for free (and make it for fairly little, too) and anyone in the whole world can buy it or hear it + internet amplifies word of mouth. they probably still wont make very much money off records, but that exposure could mean more ppl come to the show, and money comes in thru ticket sales and merch (or they might buy merch online). artists dont have to be so reliant on big labels to put out their shit in exhange for a huge cut.

p.s. get hooked on vinyl so that you can start actively supporting yr favourite artists to the detriment of yr bank account

I'd rather buy a shirt than vinyl cause one actually gives me a benefit.

Okay... I'll allow that the vinyl can be a benefit by way of being a canvas for the artwork, but aside that I'm not about to entertain any sound quality arguments in 2017.

bumping my score down, still enjoyed this a fair amount but it doesn't deserve a 4.5 imo. Contextually it may but musically it's a pretty solid 4.1/4.2

"solid 4.1/4.2" xd, is it the level of being a music aficionado that you need decimals to grade an album?

I rate in percentage and divide by 20 and round to the nearest half.

Rating is like a margin for me. The higher the collective rating, the more possibility for me to be aligned within it.

what level of pretentiousness do you need to have to judge others on their personal rating scales? is it a 4.1/4.2?

I thought that you actually rate those albums using .2,.3, etc; did not realize that was the collective rating that you were talking about.

And what I found funny is the attempt to quantify this shit so accurately; it is hard to imagine someone who knows so much music that he can differentiate between 4.2 and 4.1 albums. That's all- my level of pretentiousness is nonexistent, really

I don't actually have a scale differentiating between a 4.1 and a 4.2 but I kind of wish I did. My ratings are a hodge-podge of sweeping hyperbole and this shit has no rhyme or reason.

I like collecting data and making list and charts, so my way of rating things is probably overly complicated, but I enjoy the process. I rate each song on a 1 to 5 scale, total it up, then divide by the number of tracks. I keep a record of my ratings on a .1 scale, and when I rate them here, I just round to the nearest .5. Again overly complicated, but it's a mix of math and listener subjectivity, so it's perfect for me.

I usually rate by comparing to the strengths of other albums I have rated, seems fair enough to me, but ratings aren't the perfect descriptor, that's why reviews exist. But I'm not gonna lie we humes are definitely prone to let ratings bias our listening experience, and I am no exception.
But I genuinely belive this is Brand New's best effort
