I love their EPs and of course Black Up, but I can't get into Gangster Star. I'm hoping it grows, seems fairly dense.

huh. Gangster Star seems the opposite of dense to me - not much their lyrically or musically.

Hm. I'll give it another listen, but I found it challenging at least, if not dense. It usually takes me a minute to actually wrap my head around their style, so I'm probably wrong.

I don't understand these guys much either, but I like that. the album may not be something I return to often but it's definitely an interesting listen. lyrics are good too, which I find more essential than a lot of people

re gangster star: has better hooks (thus more memorable) than anything here. without hooks this band doesn't work for me, just end up with murky abstraction

First album grows so much... Is there a noticeable connection between the two?

From a lyrical/narrative/thematic standpoint, absolutely. Musically they're similar but this is a little more interesting imo
