A lot of things from the 80's get a bad rep, especially hair metal. People are too overly concerned with the image and style when they don't listen to the music (it's loud, fast, and heavy) sure you get cheese here and there, but it's mostly just ballads. So many great metal and rock bands came straight out of the 80's. If I'm being honest I'd take this era of rock and metal in a heartbeat compared to what I have now; it's so much memorable for me. I glimpse through newer bands of the genre and I'll forget them in a week.
