I dig their whole catalogue man, but I can't think of another album that combines hard rock and thrash even as close to
as well as this, 'cept for Burn My Eyes -Machine Head.
All the solos rule, all the vocals rule, the lyrics rule, the tones rule, there are no weak songs, sequencing is perfect, and
even if it wasn't exactly a commercial gamble, it kicks the ever-loving shit out of the black album.

but come on Among the Living, Spreading and PoT are all better than this one

I love all those albums, but I don't think of them as even being the same band as on this.
PoT is my favourite Belledona album, but it drags in a few parts. The others have lots of strong tracks, but no real flow and come off more like greatest hits compilations with B-sides interspersed.

Plus Black Lodge with Angelo Badalamenti, amazing!

Classic rating? Nothing this band has released is above a 2.5.
There is one distinct factor about this album that makes it stand out of from the rest of their discography... That is vocalist John Bush.
Bush is 100x more talented than Joey Glammadonna. Bush always sang well, even today unlike Glammadonna.
Musically this album isn't much better than the rest of their catalog. One standout is the production which is a lot heavier and darker. The production is definitely a compliment to the drums.
'Only' is the memorable and real standout track of the album. It's one of the bands best songs for sure.
Packaged Rebellion is the catchiest track and it has one of John's best vocal performances.
Third goes to Black Lodge which is the most melodic track.
I like how Bush is always blamed for the shift in musical direction. Blame Scott Ian who couldn't write good thrash so he went borderline grunge.

Good review. I really like the Bush-era, and he's my favorite Anthrax vocalist.

First look at this band and have to say on first listen its fairly mediocre. I find the sound a little muddled and lacks punch that i look for. Im not writing off will take more listen throughs before i can rate proper.

This is still the best Anthrax album overall. And yes, I started listening to them for many years prior to the vocalist and stylistic change, so it has nothing to do with what album I heard first.
Joey was never a great vocalist, and the majority of Bush haters simply hate that there was a change in vocalists, regardless of it being for the better.
