This is great, but Lore and Dead Roots Stirring are better overall.

Thanks Parksungjoon!

Lore had more impact because it presented this current direction first. Reflections is a more focused counterpart.

Great review, I enjoyed reading the details of the songs you expounded on. It'll take a few listens before I can determine which album I think is better. They're both incredible, no doubt.

Thanks! I was worried I'd get repetitive with the descriptions and cut some of it off.

srs love Lore and I'm a few listens in on this now. great parts and some great melodies, but idk if it's as awesome as Lore. time will tell. also, the hype about this album will tell. why isn't elder bigger on Sput?

vocals are stronger here than lore. they're ignorable for the most part, just add a texture to the far more interesting instrumentation

Thanks! You'd be surprised how I ignored Dead Roots Stirring and even Lore when it was released lol. I was convinced they are overly hyped by people and PR. Only in the past year I realized these guys are actually one of the best bands in the genre out there.

I remember my relationship with Lore as love at first listen. It sounded so breathtaking, so unique, so enthralling, so captivating. I can't think how someone wouldn't like a record like that.

That being said, this record is somewhat of a different story. The expectations were huge, the element of surprise was gone and the band had to deliver. I think they almost did. This record is great from start to finish but it's just not as good as Lore. The vocals are hugely improved imo. The instrumentation is again incredible and so is the songwriting, but something is missing.

"You'd be surprised how I ignored Dead Roots Stirring and even Lore when it was released"

Actually, I wouldn't. The same story has happened to me before with at least 2-3 artists and in time, i've come to realize that in order to evaluate certain pieces of music, some extra processing is needed.

^I totally get what you're saying. While this record is great it doesn't feel like a step forward for the band, more like a consolidation of their strengths.

I think i the band set the standards so high with Lore that it was difficult to make again the same great record.

I also believe that too much hype will always affect a body of work in a negative way

@Lucid

I agree that the album doesn't feel as a step forward. But regardless of what we say, this record sounds as a total different beast when compared to Lore and credit must go to Elder for not playing it safe.

Lore just feels so much more dynamic than this album. I love this album, don't get me wrong, but it really feels kinda safe and predictable, where Lore was experimental and incredibly diverse.

I also liked the louder guitar mix on Lore, but I'm a riff junky.

This is more experimental whereas "Lore" is more riffy.
