On the first few warm-ups, I connect with this album much more than with Souvlaki. To be honest, it is an album of the year contender to me as of now. It shouldn't really come as a surprise though, considering Souvlaki is more "My Slow Valentine" and this one leans more towards a "Cocteau Dive" direction which I largely prefer

Souvlaki is a bit tame. But I'll admit that it's a great album at least.

Yeah I like that they drew more on the Just For a Day aesthetic for this. In my reckoning Slowdive are a dream pop band first and foremost.

I've yet to properly "dive" into their discography (it's a "slow" process, right), but as of now, I'd say Souvlaki is a middle place between dream pop and shoegaze while this is way more on the dream poppy side of things with a much less washy sound and more emphasis on spherical/spacey sound patterns.

I agree, Souvlaki is the only one where shoegaze and dream pop is equally predominant. This one is a bit more shoegaze than Just For a Day. All three have the wall of sound characteristics but I agree that here they're less the primary focus.

Slowdive makes it a bit harder to identify the shoegaze than most bands I've heard so since their attack is less about layering noise and more about layering pretty walls of texture.

If that's the case, it's likely I'll pick up Just For a Day next - even though the list of albums to listen to has expanded by quite a bit over the last two weeks and I don't know when I'll get around to it, the usual issue
The one problem I have with the wall of sound approach is that I feel like in some cases the space between the individual notes gets filled up too densely, while I think that the space between the notes the place where a piece of music actually "breathes", if that makes any sense. That's why I often find it tiring to listen to an album of that kind all the way through. It's not really the case with Souvlaki, like I said I really like that album, but it might be a thing that's holding it down for me nonetheless. There are some "wall of sound"-based albums that I admire, so - like anything in music - it isn't a rule, just a tendency for me.

Oh yeah, if you haven't heard Just For a Day yet definitely give that a go. Don't skimp on their early EPs either, some of their best songs are on those.

Yeah, haven't heard it yet - like I mentioned, I'm basically a Slowdive beginner. That said, I've already noticed that their early EPs hold a special place for a lot of their fans, so they won't be disregarded

It's definitely a contender for me. At the moment it would either be this or the new Ulver. That said, I've yet to find an album released this year that really floors me.
But my last 3 AOTYs have all been released in the latter third of the year, so I'm still confident that it will eventually happen

I can't wait for winter to hit. I will be listening to this shit on repeat. Such an "I've got glare from the snow in my eyes" album.
