Review Summary: 80s flavoured dark pop to let it ALL OUT. MUNA is a synth pop three piece from L.A., self-proclaimed stalwart banners of the Queer movement and rising stars of the dark pop scene. About U is their first full length release after a wide collection of singles and a first EP released in social media that catched the ear of major labels, which has shaped in the form of this album, a solid introduction work that offers both a generous display of appealing melodies and a gorgeous production carried over by the band themselves.
While the central theme of About U satellites around overly psycho-analyzed love and break-up motifs, MUNA does so with a twist, allegedly excluding all gender related pronouns in their lyrics, inviting to ambiguity and generalizing a feeling that is, after all, common to all living beings.
About U is an honest statement of unconditional love regardless of race or sexual orientation, an idea that is abundant in content and swift in execution, as they fervently sing along in the engaging chorus of "I Know a Place", where they unison to the line "Don't you be afraid of love and affection". While the melancholy that encloses the album is pretty thick, the almost utopian confidence of said "I Know a Place" collides with more factual tracks like single "Crying on the Bathroom Floor" or closer "Everything". But MUNA knows how to fight back their demons with self-assurance anthems like "Loudspeaker", where lead singer Katie Gavin invites you to scream your feel-good-with-yourself oddity, maybe shaking up your semi-naked body in front of the mirror singing to your tooth brush or banging your head in a traffic jam, whatever rocks your boat.
About U is a parade of unmasked dark pop elegies and synth pop reveries where Gavin's voice shines in full splendor, with immaculate back choruses, intrepid 80s drum beats, and appropriate guitar shudders that could very well fit in any Pet Shop Boys or Talking Heads album. With undeniable catchy harmonies and a substantial passion for what they do and represent, About U marks MUNA's first remarkable shot at mainstream audiences, and just delving a tiny beat into the vast network I would say they are indeed winning.
In these dark times, where repression, alienation and über stupidity seem to be the daily companion of my morning coffee, MUNA's music resonates even louder with the general mood of the world so, if you'll excuse me, I will be jamming this while shaking off some sweat in front of my bathroom mirror.

Scrapped 5 reviews before settling down for this one. I am not very good with these, potentially sensible matters so I tried to focus on the music which is actually pretty fucking great.

I love the descriptions, mate, and I adore the tone of the review. That said, there are a few too many grammatical errors here; I understand English isn't your first language, so it might be best to get your work proofread before uploading. Going to pos this regardless, because I think the review's very well-conceived and -structured.

Thanks Blush, I used Word's spellcheck but I guess it doesn't track specific stuff related to grammar that may seem correct but that doesn't work in context. I'll take your advice and ask for a proofread in the forums.
@Arche I don't even know why I put Lorde in there, since this is nothing like it, maybe it was on their lastfm profile and I kinda rushed it in. I am not very familiar with this style so if after jamming it you know of a better rec I would highly appreciate it!

Not 100% sure how much I like this at the moment. Musically, it's absolutely fantastic. Vocally... I could grow to like them, I think. There's just little bits that piss me off, but they'd probably matt out with time.

It has slow moments around the middle but give it time and a few spins and I guarantee you it will grow a bit, especially the singles Arche. I got "I Know a Place" stuck in my head for a few days now.

barring winterbreak, every new song on here is better than the EP and i feel like that says a lot about how much they've improved
they recently played a sold-out show in toronto so they are definitely picking up traction v happy for them

Yeah winterbreak is probably my least favorite of the album. I rarely listen to this kind of music but this album got me hooked. I can see them making it big soon.

Yea it's not clicking as immediately as this one for me either. I will say that it's message is no less important, however. Gavin's got quite the knack for lyrical execution.
