i had it rated pretty low not even that long ago so i can see it. it took me a long time to really get into jazz, and this is one of the first albums i tried.
when i listen to this now i think it's one of the best things ever made though. love how dark it sounds at times.

Obviously, if you dig more into the genius of Mingus life you soon realize that he was more like a orchestra composer, theres a nice documentary out therein Youtube, "triumph of the underdog".
For me this is crearly not only the best jazz record but the greatest record in any popular genre, only excluding classical music.
It's almost a jazz symphony, I needed several listens to really get all the layers and genius parts.
