valek is cool yea
So far this and Tellurian are about the same for me.
|

I will end up bumping this but for now, the moments they try hard to go all Tool and some really sleeping inducing tracks bother me too much to give it more. Solid album though.

I've honestly never jammed too much Tool because I never dug what I have heard from them.
This band gives me more Opeth and Katatonia vibes than anything else.

The beginning of Orison is 100% Toolesque Hawks, and some vocal melodies/style. Nothing wrong about it, really, I just think the band has enough capacity to make a thing of their own without stepping into that territory.

Hawk is right abouth the Katatonia vibe, that's why I put The Fall of Hearts on the recommended.

Good work, Myth. Pos'd. The Fall of Hearts is a fitting recommendation I think. Katatonia vibes definitely are some of the strongest I'm getting from this. It's still growing on me.

this is what Opeth would like if the returned to death metal, sans the growls. But, it's way more based on the rhythm section, bass is more present and there are no synths. Besides, no matter how much the vocals sound similar, I don't think Mikael could deliver sth like Lucidity.

| |
Surprise surprise. Really enjoyed it, like an Opethy Tool.

Re-listening to this band's albums just now reminded me that they're definitely one of the most consistent and enjoyable prog rock/metal bands currently.
Riverside, Anathema, Opeth, others have changed their sound lately (while still being great oc), & w/ Tool releasing just a live jam in the past decade, makes one appreciate these guys (Rishloo's return and new Katatonia for that matter as well) more than just listening at face value and saying they're derivative, because their evolution is impressive.
Cognitive is great, basically Tool (especially with the vocals and bass guitar) + new Katatonia, & softer Opeth at times.
Tellurian was even better and had Soen doing the same, but also emphasizing the Opeth influence while adding more originality and ambition to their sound.
I'm still digesting Lykaia, which on a second listen makes me think of it as being more consistent but maintaining the Tool influence, mainly sounding like old school Opeth in a mainstream sounding approach with all clean vocals.

On the other hand, Tool would have never made a song like Lucidity.

Lucidity is amazing, like Pink Floyd meets Opeth.
|
| |
It has a very sweet melody line but it puts me to sleep man. Maybe because I jammed it at work doing mundane stuff, gotta say.

It's very drifty and melodic, but I found it engaging enough to justify how slow it was. It really reminded me of Floyd a lot.
Here's a short but sweet interview with the band on the new album for anyone interested, it's good stuff:

There isn't a bad song on this album. They're all engaging with good variety.

good review! the only thing i might edit if i were you is "Of course, a not developing artist is a doomed one". Reads a bit awkward? Of course, a stagnating artist is a doomed one.
I didnt find this album worthwhile tho. Which surprises me cuz Hawks and I agree on most things it seems lol
