I did my best.
The first track is not bad, it actually reminds me of Roxy Music, but instead of being glam rock, it's electro-pop new wave with a damn beat machine.
Good review, sir.

Roxy Music is a good comparison. I think Japan's earlier albums are more glam rock than this. Both bands have an oboe player too, which is pretty unusual for the 70s.

I'm gonna give another chance to this actual album before trying another one ;)
I thought Harmonium had an oboe player, but it's rather a clarinet. Are they similar?

yeah, they are fairly similar. The oboe always sounds sad to my ears (like in Night Porter on this album). That's the only way I tell them apart.
edit: There is a small oboe piece at the end of the chorus' in Gentlemen Take Polaroids. Even in that happy song it sounds melancholy to me.
I see that you are still lukewarm on this album, but maybe smaugman would like Roxy Music. For Your Pleasure? or Country life?

I'll check these oboe parts, thanks.
And yes for Roxy Music, I'd start with For Your Pleasure, and then with probably the first one before Country Life. I personally enjoy Sirens a lot.
I'm not sold on Japan yet, but I can see why they can be appealing.

That's a good reminder for me to spin Sirens, gonna do that right now, thanks Jethro

i dunno, i imagine this would have to be darker in order to fit in with blade runner

its pretty dark/ atmospheric imo, to my mind it is the perfecf fit; blade runner is not as dark to me as it is utterly romantic in its overall feel. i am biased though its one of my favorite movies ever lol

idk Ghosts is a lot more blade runner-ish than this album

the first song on here takes me to that universe and doesn't let me go, that immediate keyboard drum sync up right at the beginning of the title track is one of the tightest synth moments i've ever heard in my life.... truly dreamlike. sure the same can be said about ghosts, its pure blade runner.... i guess it all just has to do with personal interpretation/ association. this goes with a lot of sylvian material, it carries that spacious ambiance that echoes vangelis moments. gone to earth is one release where i feel this is especially prevalent throughout every single track. this album simply creates that eerily nostalgic, rain-soaked neon world the best for me, as far as sylvian's work goes.

yeah, I'd actually say Brilliant Trees' second side is a whole lot more in line with Blade Runner but I can see how this would fit into that aesthetic as well

vangelis' soundtrack for blade runner fits it perfectly

Wow, what a band! It's like Duran Duran and Gary Numan smoked a load of crystal meth and made an album xD

That may still be underselling the album, hah.
