"people who think this production is awful must not listen to bm"

I know you think it is well produced. I'm just saying it's not.

Technically it's not well produced but speaking comparitively to most black metal it is

Not saying it's well produced, it's just nowhere near as bad as a lot of people make it out to be.

Overall the production (especially drums) could be more defined but not all songs are affected equally bad. A song like "Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids" sounds the best of the bunch, whereas "Thirteen Autumns and a Widow" easily is the worst and understandably could throw off some listeners. It's like the kick sounds like snare and snare like the kick. The rest lie somewhere in between those production-wise. Personally though I think the production makes this album unique in their discog, and in weird way adds to the atmosphere and the theme of the album.

After surfing in the intertubes I've learned that this is an age-old discussion (consensus: The production is bad/weird but some people just hear the awesome songs), and that some dude named Pat Mahoney has a remastered version on youtube.

It's far from perfect but I find it a bit better.

Production is odd, considering Dusk came out before it but had superior production quality. It rules either way.

Wouldn't call Dusk's production superior. It's like the counterpart to this in being in the muddy end of the spectrum. Sure it sounds more organic and warm but the drums in Funeral in Carpathia are really drowned out by mid-range and bass. This is too trebly and Dusk too muddy. At least they got it somewhat right with Midian.

This is Cradle's best one in my opinion. I even dig the instrumentals. Excellent record from start to finish.

Agreed Doc this definetly is best Cradle, though Dusk comes close at times.
