Call me selfish but I just wanted another Insomnium album. Beating around the bush with a 40 minute concept song within a genre that doesn't accommodate that sort of length just seems kinda silly. Probably a similar score for myself, though I need to give it more time.
That being said, getting this as a "one more song" at the end of a gig would be frickin legendary.

Within the genre:
Crimson
Crimson II
Light of Day, Day of Darkness
Plague of Butterflies
...just off the top of my head, but this certainly is not a new concept. One could even go as far as to say that albums like MAYH or Still Life can fall into the mix.

Apologies, the only albums that came to mind were the two Crimson records. Just doesn't seem like as common a feat than in doom or black metal, but maybe I haven't listened around enough.

This review makes me a nervous, I loved the last album so much. Probably my favorite album of 2014...I feel like I'm headed for disappointment

I feel like the review, as well written as it is, simultaneously praises and decries this album for not sounding like older Insomnium.
It's really confusing honestly.
I'm pretty sure I'm still going to love this. Sput is the only place I've seen not kissing this thing's ass, which is also confusing.

I praise them because it is genuinely nice to hear their sound evolve and they do try a lot of different things on this record, but ultimately it doesn't work here because they don't explore those different things thoroughly enough. In the past, they had their niche and were fully committed to it. Here it's kinda like they are just bumbling around trying a bunch of neat new sounds but never giving each one an adequate chance to develop. So, therefore, it is both a positive and a negative that they are not as focused as their older selves.

"Here it's kinda like they are just bumbling around"
This is gonna be the tipping point for me. If it comes off like this to me then this'll probably be a 3.5 at best. But if I feel like there's enough meat, and good transitions, then I'll probably love it.
